thursday bike path

thursday bike path

There's a pleasant little 8-10 mile loop I like to ride. It connects to a large network of bike paths covering a couple hundred miles, but I'm rarely so ambitious that I ride more than 10-15 miles at a time. This loop generally follows a creek. It's not uncommon to see deer, on rare occasions a fox. And though it looks a wee bit wild, this loop actually takes me to a mini-mall that has (among other things) a supermarket, a few fast food chain restaurants, a gym/spa, a really bad hair-cutter, and a liquor store (which is handy if you've visited the hair-cutter). So I can get in a nice ride and at the end, stop to buy food and drink for the next couple of days.

My New Bike

My New Bike

KHS Urban Uno. I absolutely LOVE this bike. It's my first real road bike, and it serves it job well. I took the back brake off right away, and I am making it fixed gear really soon. In the seat bag I have a spare tube, tire levers, allen keys, and a presta valve adapter. I hang my mini lock off it just for running to the store. Highly recommended. I'm going to add some accent painting soon and some stickers to make it mine. Enjoy.

The beagle atop
The van quietly begs for
A very large treat.

A busy day: interview downtown at a cafe on Mott Street with British company called Casual Films, then I hit three open houses (since I was already dressed for the part) in the $6MM plus range—where, exactly like an old-time encyclopedia salesman, I just knocked on doors and showed my wares. Except my wares fit on an iPad. And I was pitching high-end video showcases for online distribution. But other than that, exactly like an encyclopedia salesman.

And then I went out to see my parents in QUEENS (I got stuck on a local and the E was running all funny) to say hi and check out a bicycle they had in the garage. It's from, like, 1991 or something, and is a girl's touring bike.

However, it turns out, my parents were talking to my uncle at lunch about how I was coming to appraise the bike in the garage, and he gave them HIS old, rusty cheap mountain bike from 2003 for me to use. It was sitting in the back of the car, ready for for it's trip back to Manhattan. Kismet?

So I look it up: the brand name (Magna) was a) only sold in Toys R' Us stores, and b) had a gigantic safety recall in 2001. Hmmm... this is not instilling much confidence. Yet this is exactly what I'm looking for: a bike so bad that NO ONE IN THEIR RIGHT MIND would bother stealing it, because the cost of the effort required to cut the bolt would already be more than the bike is worth! This way, I can lock it up outside in the elements and really JUST NOT GIVE A SHIT. Imagine the hours of lugging it upstairs and the room a nicer bike would take up in the apartment!

It is now sitting in our bedroom. Thankfully Julie and Jamie are up in Massachusetts, as it's taking up a ton of floorspace and shedding dirt onto the carpet (of course, I will vacuum it, sweetie). Tomorrow I will take a trip to the Master Bike Shop on 77th, and I allow the owner to determine if this is worth keeping, or if there's something unsafe about the bike itself. A third possibility is that it may just not be cost-effective to keep since it needs a few repairs. E.g., the brakes are bad, the gears don't change right, the gear shift is broken, the chairs, tire hubs and handlebar are all COMPLETELY rusted. It's quite embarrassing actually—though that may be a good exercise in NOT GIVING A SHIT in and of itself. We shall see.

OK, that was a tangent.

Back from the U.S. of A...

Back from the U.S. of A...

Just returned from a lovely vacation to Oregon and Washington states, USA! I've bought a bit of yarn and two books in Seattle, but actually really restrained myself :-)
Got some stuff that I really wanted to try out and that's not easy to find in "real" (not-online) yarn stores in Europe.

We love visiting the States, BTW. Apart from all political blah blah, we really really like:

- nature in the US: national parks, state parks, and all the spectacular and variable landscapes you encounter. For us Europeans it's unimaginable to have such vast stretches of untainted, well-managed, spectacular and quiet (!!) beach/mountains/woods/desert/you name it.
- people's overwhelming friendliness and openness we encounter everywhere. I'm so NOT looking forward to the Dutch roughness and rudeness... blech!
- and the generally relaxed feeling of life in general. I hardly saw any speeding cars or agressive drivers, for instance.

However, I'm glad to be back home because
- here, food portions are normal (I'm amazed that not more people are obese in the US.. you really have to make very conscious efforts to find healthy food in smaller quantities!). And the possibility to find good bread! And real cheese! Ahh!
- bikes, public transport and the general normalcy of walking rather than driving to a destination!
- contemporary arts and culture; I'm grateful for the Dutch culture funding policies that enable our (apparently) much larger abundancy and variety of contemporary cultural expression.

What is your favorite destination for a vacation? What do you like most about there/home?

BTW, I bought these yarns at So Much Yarn! and Hilltop Yarn in Seattle. Loved both stores. Found them via Ravelry... hurray for Ravelry!
