best road bike components - Look Keo

Look Keo Easy Road Bike Pedals - 6008090000

Look Keo Easy Road Bike Pedals - 6008090000

The Keo Easy pedal is ideal for starting cycling using automatic pedals, or for recreational use. Because it lacks spring adjustment it is very light - 120g. New KEO standard - We have developed this new standard (cleat and pedal) in a lightweight goal as well as being compatible with all the actual shoes on the market. The size of the cleat is a little bit smaller, but we keep the fixation point of the old standard which is a reference on the market. Injected polyamide body - The body is injected on a really specific material : high resistance glass fibre charged polyamide. This material is less expensive than carbon and makes possible a very resistant and light body. If this pedal has been made in aluminium the weight will have been over 170 grams. Height: Axle/sole - 17,5 mm against 21,6 with the old standard; to close the axle improve the power of pedalling. When coming from the delta standard to the KEO one, it is advice to adjust the saddle 4 mm lower. Spring tension cannot be adjusted. Cleat: LOOK KEO (new standard) bi-components - The red, the grey or the black LOOK KEO cleat still offers a large surface to maximize the power transmission. With two different materials: white part in Teflon for the shifting parts will kick out squizing and noising even in bad weather conditions, and the red or black part in polycetal to guaranty the strength. Fit memory of the cleat - A small black piece located and screwed on the sole will save the memory of fitting the actual cleat

Drivetrain Upgrade: Final Result

Drivetrain Upgrade: Final Result

The final assembly took about five minutes and I didn't stop to take any pictures during. Just slide the right side of the crankset through the bottom bracket, attach the opposite arm, torque it down to spec and then thread the chain through. Then I just put my old pedals on with a bit of grease on the threads.

The one major annoyance was that the new crankset has a chainline of 51mm while the old one was 50mm. This required that I adjust the front derailleur. The front derailleur is the only "brand Sh" component on the bike and like many of their components is a pain to deal with. Took about 10 minutes to completely fine-tune it.

Visually I would have prefered something with less bling to it. The crankset and chainrings were described on FSA's website as being "grey anodized." I think of grey as the color of my pedals or tires and that's kind of what I expected. Still, it's not like I would have bought something else had I known. The price was too good.

Besides, a good coating of dust will hide the bling factor quite nicely.

Also, note replacement tires since last set of photos. The old ones were not worn, but had been in the garage for several years before I actually used them, and the rubber was cracking.

Now, time to ride!

Drivetrain Upgrade: All New Components

Drivetrain Upgrade: All New Components

FSA Afterburner crankset, FSA MegaExo bottom bracket (with spacers), SRAM PG-980 cassette, SRAM PC-991 chain.

The cassette is an exact replacement of what was there before, done because there was some obvious wear on the smaller sprockets of the old one.

Cateye HL-EL530 LED Bicycle Headlight

Cateye HL-EL530 LED Bicycle Headlight

The Cateye HL-EL530 sets new standards in brightness by lighting up the road with over 2200 candlepower from one single white LED bulb. This power is due to CatEye's own OptiCube technology. Not only is this bike headlight bright but it is water resistant and has a runtime of over 90 hours. Make sure you see what's ahead of you and be ultra sure that night drivers can see you coming up the road. Highly water resistant Side visibility FlexTight mounting bracket Uses 4 AA batteries More than 90 hours of runtime

Fifty percent brighter than Cateye's HL-EL500 model, this extra-bright one-LED white headlight generates 1,500 candlepower thanks to Cateye's OptiCube technology that optimizes lens and reflector brightness. It runs on four AA batteries and produces 90 hours of run time. Other features include side visibility and a tool-free mounting bracket.
About Cateye
Founded in 1946 in Osaka, Japan, CatEye is the leading manufacturer of cycle computers, lights, and reflectors to cyclists in the world. In 1964, CatEye was the first in the industry to create a flashing lamp for bicycles, followed by their first battery headlamp in 1982, and the very first bicycle head lamp using white LEDs in 2001. The company's Opticube lens and reflectors make the brightest and most efficient LED headlights. while their LD500 remains the only rear safety light that can meet the rigorous CPSC standards for reflectivity.

1977 BMW headlight bucket - relays?

1977 BMW headlight bucket - relays?

I think I have a short somewhere in my 1977 BMW R100/7's wiring harness. Can you help troubleshoot it?

Here's the diagnosis:

STARTING CONDITION:
New, freshly charged battery.
Ignition key in off position, turn signal in center (off) position, headlight switch in top (off) position.

STEPS TAKEN:
1) Turn ignition key to middle position
-- result: parking lights come on. No other weirdness.

2) Turn ignition key to "on" position
-- result: headlight secondary light turns on. No other weirdness.

3) Squeeze front brake lever OR depress rear brake pedal (both have same result)
-- result: brake light comes on. NW ("no other wierdness")

4) Set turn signal to "left turn" or "right turn" (results identical in either case)
-- SOMETIMES: left turn signal comes on. NW. If this result happens, proceed to step 5.
-- SOMETIMES: Big plastic Hella turn-signal relay emits a low pitched, clicking/buzzing noise. if that happens, END OF TEST.

5) Set turn signal to center (no turn)
-- result: turn signal turns off. NW

6) Turn headlight switch down one to middle position
-- result: parking light still on. NW

7) Turn headlight switch down one more to bottom position
-- result (always): high-pitched buzzing noise from main headlight relay. Headlight does not come on.

Step 7 can be reproduced at any time. For example, step 7 could be done in place of step 4, and I always get the high-pitched buzzing noise from the headlight relay.

Can some kind soul tell me WHERE to start looking for shorts, and WHAT to start probing? I own a multi-tester, and have a basic idea of how to use it, but I'm not a wizard.

2011 Raleigh Alley way - bike horse whisperer

2011 Raleigh Alley way - bike horse whisperer

This sweet ride is finally getting broken in. I pre-ordered it Summer 2010 and had to wait til Dec. 22 for delivery. Then it snowed and snowed for months. We're making up for lost time now and ready for a review.
The basics:
I commute 14 miles a day and it seems tough enough for the mean streets of Brooklyn. It's a smooth, fast ride and totally lives up to my high expectations. Shifting, braking, handling are all flawless. Eight speeds seems fine for city riding. The internal gear hub will stay grit free and the belt drive will not need regular cleaning and maintenance -- good things for apt. living in a grimey city. I love the always there headlight and could add a dynamo taillight. I also love the classy little bell by the left brake handle. The brakes squeal a bit but I don't mind that heads up.
The fender had to be riveted to the stay because it rattled so much.
Kick stand mount - should have integrated kick stand plate.
The customizing could get a little pricey and/or time-consuming unless you or someone you know has the tools and know how. Thanks GB!

About Energizer
Energizer's leadership in the portable lighting industry spans more than 110 years. The company started in 1898 when Conrad Hubert, a Russian immigrant, lit up New York City with the introduction of the newly patented electric hand torch or flashlight. Soon afterward, Hubert began manufacturing flashlights, batteries, and light bulbs under the name Eveready. Hubert put his first flashlights into the hands of New York City policemen, resulting in high visibility and nearly instantaneous success for his product. Over the years, Eveready's technology team introduced the tungsten bulb, made numerous switch improvements, and developed spotlights to project the light forward. Energizer's commitment to flashlight and battery technology took a substantial step forward in 1982 with the opening of its Westlake, Ohio, research and development center, one of the industry's largest. In April 2000, Energizer was spun off as an independent company now known as Energizer Holdings, Inc.

Pedal Car Arrest

Pedal Car Arrest

The driver of the artwork Shared Propulsion Car arrested on Queen Street, by the Toronto Police.

On October 25th Toronto Police arrested the driver of Shared Propulsion Car, an artwork by the 2007 Sobey Award winner Michel de Broin, on Queen Street West. A trial date has been set for April 3rd, 2008.

The revolutionary vehicle consists of a 1986 Buick Regal body stripped of its engine, suspension, transmission and electrical system, and propelled by the energy of its passengers. The vehicle retains the illusion of the mass-produced luxury automobile, but is now reduced to a shell, with a top speed of 15km per hour. This unique car requires no gasoline and produces no toxic emissions, presenting a political alternative to the conspicuous consumption of car culture (no wars have been waged over pedal-power).

The vehicle is part of a solo exhibition by the acclaimed artist, on display at Mercer Union, an artist-run centre in downtown Toronto, from October 24th to December 8th. The car left for it’s maiden Toronto voyage on October 25th, the afternoon after the opening reception. Dean Baldwin, brand-new license in hand, took the steering wheel, assisted by Dan Young and gallery Co-Directors Dave Dyment and Elaine Gaito. The public responded with enthusiasm, sympathy and solidarity.

The vehicle was driven nine blocks (from 37 Lisgar Street, to Strachan Ave), before being pulled over by the police. The driver and passengers were left to wait for 30 minutes in the car, presumably while the officers determined which law had, in fact, been broken. They settled on "operating an unsafe vehicle" and a tow-truck was called.

Today Baldwin appeared before a judge and entered a plea of not guilty. A trial has been set for the third of April, at 3pm. The court will have to argue that the Shared Propulsion Car is more dangerous than other vehicles on the road (bicycles, unicycles, roller-skates, rickshaws, skateboards and other “muscle-powered vehicles”, in addition to automobiles). In the last 50 years 200,000 Canadians have died in car accidents. No pedal-car deaths have been reported.

Mercer Union and artist Michel de Broin would like to invite you to join us on April 3rd, in courtroom R at 60 Queen Street West, at 3pm. Seating is limited, so please arrive early. With the expectation of winning the right to operate the vehicle on the streets of Toronto, the artwork will be towed to Old City Hall on the morning of April 3rd. We hope to leave the courthouse in victory, and slowly pedal home.

John Deere - Mighty Trike

John Deere Mighty Trike from Learning Curves... now THIS is a trike! Driveways and play yards are no match for this rugged 3-wheeler! Constructed of sturdy tubular steel and detailed in the iconic John Deere yellow and green. HUGE rubber tires with thick tread roll over any obstacle in Junior's way, and cruise over grass, gravel or sidewalks with equal ease. Trust me, he'll grow out of it before he grows tired of it! Ages 3 and over. Measures 34 x 26". Order Today! John Deere Mighty Trike from Learning Curves

Big, simple, and strong--especially strong--are the three words that define this tricycle. Its all-metal construction makes it several times the weight of many competitors, but how many of them have a warranty that reads "Ten years or 10,000 miles"? This brute has monster-sized inflatable tires (10 inches in diameter by 3.5 inches wide at the back, and 15 inches by almost 4 inches at the front). The frame looks strong enough to ride through a brick wall, and the seat--also metal, and not exactly built for comfort--adjusts infinitely along the sloped main frame. A simple hole-and-pin hitch at the back is perfect for towing. Adult assembly is required. --Richard Farr
